At our February 13th meeting, Fiona Mitchell, Senior Practice Leader Radiation Therapy from Alberta Health Services in Edmonton, Alberta came to speak about all the new advancements in radiation.   For those attending who are going through or even those who have gone through radiation treatment, Fiona gave a real insight into the new technology which helped to calm any anxiety that some may have been feeling.  
Fiona is originally from the Shetland Islands in Scotland and has lived on the Sunshine Coast since 2002. She trained as a radiation therapist at the Edinburgh School of Radiation Therapy. And has worked in Holland, and the UK before immigrating to Canada. During her 21 year tenure at the BC Cancer Agency, Fiona’s passion for patient and therapist education grew.   As the Provincial Professional and Academic Leader for Radiation Therapy she was responsible for ensuring the radiation therapists maintained the knowledge and skills required for their professional practice and the she was the clinical leader for BCIT radiation therapy students.   She has worked at BCIT as Associate Dean for Diagnostics and consulted on the development of a regulatory college for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Health Professionals in BC. Currently she is the Senior Practice Leader for Radiation Therapy in Alberta.
Fiona has a variety of academic accomplishments and has received numerous professional awards.   She holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, a MA in Leadership, and a BSc in radiation therapy.   She is a Fellow of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) and has held numerous professional association positions, culminating in serving as CAMRT President for 2008 and 2009.     Fiona has co-authored courses on education and leadership. She has an assortment of publications and has presented internationally. In addition, she has participated in a range of research initiatives.
